Sounds of Korea brings together pansori singer Sangah Lee and Korean wind instrumentalist Dasom Baek for an evening of Korean musical storytelling.
Pansori is a Korean form of musical storytelling in which narrative unfolds through voice, rhythm and dramatic expression. Sangah Lee's vocal storytelling meets Dasom Baek's daegeum and sogeum, bringing voice and traditional wind instruments into conversation.
About the Artists
Sangah Lee is a Toronto-based ethnomusicologist, professional pansori singer, Korean music instructor and cultural producer. She holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Toronto and is Artistic Director of the Canada Pansori Center. She has taught Korean music at the University of Toronto and currently teaches through the Korean Cultural Centre Canada.
Dasom Baek is a Korean daegeum and sogeum performer and composer. Her work draws from Korean traditional music while exploring improvisation, extended techniques, live effects, looping and electronics. She has presented her work internationally and released the solo albums Nothingness and Mirror City.
Experience the Music
Pansori places storytelling at the centre of the performance through expressive singing and rhythm. Alongside the voice, you will hear the daegeum, a large transverse bamboo flute, and the smaller, higher-pitched sogeum.
The performance offers an introduction for those encountering these forms for the first time while leaving space for deeper listening for those already familiar with Korean traditional music.
