Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), based in The Hague, is one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies, redefining the art form for more than 60 years. With innovation, artistic research, and talent development at its core, NDT champions diverse voices and uses dance as a universal language to connect audiences around the world.
Comprised of two companies—NDT 1 and NDT 2, its acclaimed ensemble of emerging dancers—NDT continues to push artistic boundaries through collaborations with some of today’s most exciting choreographers and artists. Honouring its celebrated legacy while shaping the future of contemporary dance, NDT captivates audiences across the Netherlands and internationally.
Since 2020, NDT has been led by artistic director Emily Molnar, whose visionary leadership has ushered in a bold new era for the company. Under her direction, NDT has welcomed more than 30 new artistic voices and expanded its roster of associate choreographers to include Marcos Morau, Jermaine Spivey, and siblings Marne van Opstal and Imre van Opstal, alongside longtime collaborators Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke. Molnar has also spearheaded acclaimed new works and collaborations, including Figures in Extinction with Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney/Complicité.
Founded in 1978 under the leadership of Jiří Kylián, NDT 2 was created as a platform for virtuoso young performers and has since evolved into an internationally celebrated company in its own right. Through collaborations with emerging and established choreographers, dancers develop versatility across a wide range of movement styles and creative practices. NDT 2 presents its own distinct repertoire and tours extensively throughout the Netherlands and internationally.
PROGRAM
Act 1:
mutual comfort by Edward Clug
Four Solitudes by Crystal Pite
Intermission
Act 2:
SAABA by Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar
“The title could not better describe the experience of creating this piece, which, in just 10 minutes, captures the essence of my dance universe,” Clug shares. In his work, he is interested in the dancers’ individual experiences and the contradictions that shape us as humans. Set to a score composed by Milko Lazar, the dancers explore connections and the ease and support they offer, revealling moments of unexpected beauty, subtle humour, and finely detailed movement.
Associate choreographer Crystal Pite’s poetic quartet, an excerpt from the full length Kuntskamer, is now presented as a standalone piece. Pite says, ‘Rilke wrote that love consists of “solitudes that protect and border and greet each other.’ Love, in this sense, can connect and hold us without opposing aloneness. Four Solitudes is animated by that polarity: we can stand strong in our solitudes and still be virtuosic at togetherness.” Schubert’s piano sonata gives voice to Pite’s love for dancers and the luminous music that moves them.
The worlds that Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar create on stage are truly unique—intoxicating and deeply immersive. You’re invited to step into the universe of SAABA. Exuding passion and vulnerability, the work unfolds through hypnotic movement, evocative lighting, and the irresistible groove of composer Ori Lichtik. SAABA is another brilliant example of Eyal’s daring choreographic voice, seamlessly transforming classical ballet and contemporary dance into something beyond imagination. Irresistible!
