Want to get your bike shifting smoothly without relying on the bike shop for every adjustment? Ready to take a closer look at what’s happening between your pedals and your rear wheel?
In this 3.5 hour hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to inspect, maintain and adjust your bicycle’s drivetrain. We’ll start with a short theoretical introduction before putting those skills into practice on your own bike, giving you plenty of time to work through adjustments with guidance from your instructor.
We’ll cover how to identify the different parts of your drivetrain, inspect your chain for wear, measure and replace a chain, and remove and install a cassette. You’ll also learn how front and rear derailleurs work, including limit screws, barrel adjusters, pulley wheels, spring engagement and cable tension, and how to use these adjustments to get your shifting running smoothly.
Along the way, we’ll troubleshoot common drivetrain issues and learn how to identify when a component needs adjustment, maintenance or replacement. If your bike doesn’t need major adjustments, you can also spend some time cleaning and maintaining your drivetrain while developing your hands-on skills.
The workshop is designed to give you plenty of time to make mistakes, learn from them and build confidence. We’ll finish with a safety check of everyone’s bike before you leave, so you can ride away with a better understanding of your drivetrain and the skills to maintain it yourself.
Skills required: This is an intermediate workshop for participants who already know the basics of bike maintenance, such as assessing their bike and fixing a flat, and are ready to dive deeper into drivetrain maintenance and adjustment.
The price includes all necessary tools, equipment and expert guidance.
Note: Please bring your own bicycle to the workshop. We recommend that your bike be in workable condition so you can safely participate in the hands-on portion of the class. Severely bent derailleur hangers, severely worn chainrings, severely rusted cables or cables that are too short to properly engage the pinch bolt may prevent your bike from being suitable for the workshop.
