Over the last five years my work has focused on one image, a house, distilled to its essential parts: a rectangle with a triangle on top. I use this shape as an aesthetic and ideological container that evokes complex personal and political histories.
For me, it is both a symbol and a literal depiction of my childhood home in Toronto, one of thousands of nearly identical post-war houses. By varying material and compositional elements I can transform and refract the meaning of this architectural icon. Like the houses they depict, these prints and drawings are intended to be sites of projection, proxy forms that feel as familiar as they are alienating, combining the dryness of architectural drafting with the fervour of a haunting.
Acknowledgments
The work in this exhibition was made over the last three years between Toronto and Roswell, New Mexico, where I am temporarily based at the Roswell Artist-in-Residence (RAiR) with my husband Tyler Bright Hilton, who is a resident. Thank you so much to the RAiR community and artists for this adventure.
Thank you also to the Tamarind Institute and their Artist Residency Program with the Tamarind Student Printers, in particular Education Director Brandon Gunn and Printer Training Program students Melanie Eng and Miriana Wasserman. I absolutely could not have made the lithographs in this exhibition without you.
I want to especially acknowledge the work of Smokestack Studio and my technical collaborator Laine Groeneweg. Last but not least, thank you to The Gilder, the team at OKG, Tyler and Kitt.
