New York Times bestselling author David Treuer shares his groundbreaking, intimate reckoning with the history of North America.
The Savage Mind is a seamless blend of memoir, history and reportage, in which Treuer leverages his unique dual perspective as the son of a Holocaust survivor and the first American Indigenous woman judge in the United States to offer an examination of the distinct nature of North American violence.
In contrast to the frontier thesis of American history, Treuer contends that frontier violence cannot be defined as an external force, but that it has actually entered the culture and taken root in our very selves.
By reckoning with these histories, the book confronts our complicity in either normalizing violence, or blaming it on outside sources, instead of seeing its recurring patterns and contending with its significance.
David Treuer speaks with journalist and author Tanya Talaga about The Savage Mind and shares why he chooses to embrace an ultimately hopefully view of the continent.
