Join us for a fun-filled afternoon of creating a customized notebook and prints!
Using the process of linocut, you’ll create a custom printed Japanese notebook and 4 fine art prints. From designing your image, through to carving and printing, our instructor will demonstrate linocut techniques and provide individual guidance. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with 1 unique botanical-themed notebook, 4 original prints and new printmaking skills. Beginners welcome.
You can create anything, so please bring photos, sketches, and designs for reference and inspiration. Your image needs to measure 4×6 inches. If you’re stuck for ideas, pressed leaves will be available.
Making art can be messy, please wear old clothes or an apron. Materials included.
Each student will receive:
1 Japanese notebook
1 block of soft cut lino
Saturday, October 24, 1 to 4 p.m.
Public $80, TBG Members $70 (plus applicable taxes and fees).
About Alan Li
Artist and conservationist Alan Li uses pencils, ink and paint to document the wonders of the natural world. Alan’s mission is to build connections to nature through arts-based education. Since 2015, he has been partnering with non-profit environmental organizations to teach nature-focused art programs and workshops.
Alan was responsible for the successful launch of the Toronto Nature Sketch program in 2018, teaching all of the art lessons during that inaugural year. Nature Sketch is an initiative of Canadian artist Robert Bateman and the Bateman Foundation.
In 2019, Alan was a speaker at the annual Ravine Symposium at Toronto Botanical Garden. In his presentation, he shared stories behind ravine inspired artwork created by himself and a small brigade of volunteer artists. Funds raised through the sale of the artwork were donated to ravine conservation initiatives at the garden.
Alan currently teaches Field Sketching, Nature Drawing and Linocut Printmaking at Toronto Botanical Garden and the High Park Nature Centre.
