Bill King: Life Between The Notes

But books can only take you so far. Words sit quietly on paper. They don’t breathe. They don’t carry the pulse of a piano chord hanging in the air or the silence between stories. They don’t let you see the eyes of a musician moments before stepping into the light. They don’t reveal the texture of Toronto streets at dawn after a long night of jazz, conversation, and possibility.

So, for this one-off special evening, I’ve decided not to revisit my life through a formal reading or some carefully staged chronology of accomplishments. I’m not interested in nostalgia packaged like a museum exhibit. Life was never tidy, and neither was art.

Instead, I want to create an evening that feels human. Honest. Aural and visual. A gathering of memory and music, photography and storytelling. A look back at the creative side of my brain, the restless side, the side forever chasing the next image, the next phrase, the next note that might explain why we do any of this in the first place.

This is not some immersive Vegas-style production with smoke cannons and choreographed lighting cues. No spectacle. No tricks. Just a man, a piano, a microphone, and a lifetime of moments that somehow survived the passing years.

The evening will unfold the same way memory unfolds. Unexpectedly. One story opening the door to another. A photograph triggering a song. A song leading into a confession. A laugh interrupted by something more reflective. The kind of conversations musicians used to have after the clubs closed and the city finally quieted down.

The Redwood Theatre is the perfect room for this. It has warmth. Soul. The kind of acoustics that let silence mean something. Awesome sound, striking visual possibilities, comfortable seating, and enough wine and spirits to soften the edges between performer and audience. I don’t want there to be much distance between us that night. I want to bring people directly into my world — into the art, the stories, the photographs, the music, the wandering observations collected over decades of listening closely to life.

There will be black-and-white portraits of musicians lost inside their craft. Faces caught between exhaustion and transcendence. There will be journeys through our city — Toronto streets I continue to document almost daily — a city forever changing and yet somehow carrying echoes of every decade I’ve lived through. Streetcars at dusk. Alleyways after rain. Neon reflected in winter pavement. The ordinary becomes extraordinary through attention.

Photography taught me patience. Journalism taught me curiosity. Music taught me mercy. Together, they formed the language of my life.

And through it all, there was family. Love. Chaos. Survival. Reinvention. The constant balancing act between ambition and tenderness, between public life and private ache. Between the romance of the road and the quiet need to belong somewhere.

There’s a piano there and a microphone. The rest is up to me.

Maybe that’s the story of my entire life when you think about it.

So, this won’t simply be a performance. It will be an invitation into the rooms I’ve lived in creatively and emotionally for the better part of six decades. A night of music, memory, reflection, humour, and the occasional detour, because detours, after all, are where most of the important things happened.

It’s story night at the Redwood.

And every story still begins with a single note.
