Impressionist-inspired painting on canvas with Mariana Hernandez
Spend three Tuesday afternoons looking closely, painting loosely, and seeing familiar Toronto scenes through an Impressionist lens.
Led by artist Mariana Hernandez, this free visual arts series for older adults begins with works by Monet, Pissarro, and Manet. Participants will look at how Impressionist painters approached colour, light, brushwork, and everyday scenes before beginning a painting of their own.
In the first session, participants will sketch a composition on canvas using either the Berczy Fountain or a Man and Child reference image. The second workshop introduces longer painting brushes and step-by-step painting techniques, with attention to expressive brushwork and colour. In the final session, participants can build layers, add finer details, and continue developing their work.
No previous painting experience is needed, and all materials are provided.
Mariana is a Toronto-based artist and art educator originally from Chile. Her own work is strongly influenced by Toronto’s waterfront and urban spaces, and is known for vibrant colour and bold line work. She studied Fine Art at OCAD University and has facilitated several arts programs with Jamii’s Belonging community.
Registration is required for the Belonging Older Adults program. Once registered, participants can drop in to the October workshops without registering for each session separately.
Please note: there is no workshop on October 13.
