*Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company - FORBIDDEN*
Experience an intimate yet powerful solo performance exploring female desire, from one of today’s leading contemporary Indian classical dance artists.
FORBIDDEN is in three parts:
Awakening: Dream, fragrant flower, cage
Playing the game: Denial, adornment, seduction, rage
Burning: My story, consigning to flames all that is Forbidden
Following its acclaimed U.K. premiere at Sadler’s Wells, Mangaldas brings FORBIDDEN to Toronto on International Women’s Day weekend, taking on a question that feels more urgent than ever: why are women who openly express their sexual desire so often judged, controlled, and ultimately punished, across both conservative and liberal societies?
As the stage shifts and cracks beneath her feet, ankle bells—traditionally worn by classical dancers in India—take on new meaning. They become symbols of desire deemed unacceptable, objects shaped by the male gaze, and boundaries meant to be crossed.
An evocative soundscape by composer Nikki Wells weaves together vocals, tabla, pakhawaj, cello, classical compositions, and spoken text.
FORBIDDEN was nominated in the category of outstanding female modern performance in the 2023 National Dance Awards UK.
